Is That a Poo??? A Childcare Worker’s Funniest Surprise
By Shannon Campbell – 31 October 2016
When you work with children, you learn very quickly that a good sense of humour is essential. Kids keep you on your toes, and every day brings something new — and sometimes, something unexpectedly hilarious.
This story from early childhood educator Shannon Campbell is one of those unforgettable moments.

The “Brown Crayon” Incident
I once worked with a wonderful and inspiring educator named Jean. She had an incredible sense of humour and a beautiful way of treating every child with respect, regardless of their background, abilities, or quirks.
One morning, while cleaning up the room, Jean found what looked like a brown crayon under a bookcase that had just been moved.
Without thinking much of it, she picked it up, ready to draw a quick doodle for the kids.
And then — horror.
It wasn’t a crayon at all.
It was… a dried-up poo.
Once the shock passed, the laughter that followed rolled on for the entire day. The kids, the staff — everyone joined in. It was impossible not to.
Humour + Heart = Great Childcare
From that day, I learned two big lessons from Jean:
1. Humour makes everything easier
Childcare days are long, messy, unpredictable, and wonderfully chaotic. A good laugh can turn a stressful moment into one you remember fondly for years.
2. Every child deserves respect
Jean treated every child as an equal — no exceptions. She saw their potential, their individuality, and their humanity. It’s something I carry with me in my work, even years later.
